Zinc Top Dining Tables
A zinc top dining table is made to be used. The muted gray surface takes on a living patina that deepens with every meal, every spill and every year. Zinc is one of our most requested finishes. Groundwork has built custom dining tables by hand in Philadelphia since 1993, and every zinc table is made to order: hand-wrapped, sized for your room and set on the base you choose.

The muted zinc surface brings a distinctive material into a room. It complements interiors already layered with wood, stone or tile. Zinc also changes as you live with it. Water rings, scratches and the marks of daily life become part of the story.
That's what makes a zinc table the opposite of precious. You don't have to worry about the first glass ring. It's a surface that invites you to actually live with it, and over the years it looks more like an old French bar top than a new piece of furniture.
How we build a zinc table
Each zinc top is hand-wrapped and built to your exact specifications by skilled local artisans in southeastern Pennsylvania, using zinc from trusted suppliers.
The base is where a zinc table takes on its personality, and the tables we've built show the range:
- Steel: clean steel pedestals, slim powder-coated frames (white, or a bold orange), and laser-cut sculptural bases. Steel paired with zinc gives a chic industrial look. Our steel bases can be left with a natural finish and a coat of wax, or powder-coated in any of hundreds of colors.
- Wood: sculptural white oak bases, raw oak legs with a steel stretcher, and our painted or distressed trestle, Craftsman, Bainbridge X-brace, Haverford and Bistro bases.
- Root: our sculptural root-style bases, with no two cedar roots ever alike, for a more organic look.
Painted bases are available in any color, so the table can tie into the rest of your room.
Caring for zinc
Zinc asks very little. An occasional coat of paste wax adds depth to the finish and extra protection. Over time, the buildup of wax and patina is what gives a zinc top its old-bar-top character.

Sizes and shapes
Every table is built to the length and width you give us. The zinc tables we've built range from a 48-inch round to a 144-inch-long, 20-inch-deep bistro table that works for dining or serving. Tops come in rectangular, square, round, elliptical oval and racetrack oval shapes. Long tables can sit on double or triple bases, like our 108-inch racetrack oval on three white oak bases.
Not sure what size you need? Send us your room dimensions and how many people you usually seat, and we'll help you work it out. As a general rule of thumb, plan on roughly 24 inches of table edge per seated person and about 36 inches of clearance between the table and the wall.

FAQ
What is a zinc top dining table?
It's a table whose top is wrapped in a sheet of zinc metal. Zinc has a muted gray surface that works alongside wood, stone and tile, and it develops a living patina that deepens with use. We pair our zinc tops with steel, wood, painted or root-style bases.
Will my zinc table get marked?
Yes, and that's the point. Zinc develops a patina that deepens with every use. Water rings, scratches and the marks of daily life become part of the story. Over time, the buildup of wax and patina gives the zinc the look of an old French bar top.
How do I care for a zinc table top?
An occasional coat of paste wax adds depth to the finish and extra protection. Beyond that, zinc is meant to be lived with, not babied.
