Walnut Dining Tables
Walnut doesn't need much help. A clear matte finish is all it takes to bring out its deep chocolate color and purplish undertones. Groundwork has built custom dining tables by hand in Philadelphia since 1993, and every solid walnut table we make is built to order in the size, shape and base that suits your room.
Inquire About a Walnut TableWhy walnut
Each hardwood we work with has its own character, and walnut's is hard to miss. Its dark, chocolate-toned grain with purplish undertones looks finished on its own, so there's no need to stain it. We just protect it with a clear matte finish and let the wood do the work. We source our walnut from Pennsylvania mills whenever possible.
Walnut suits clean-lined, contemporary rooms. It also brings warmth to a space full of white walls, stone or steel.
How we build a walnut table
Every walnut table is built to your exact specifications by skilled local artisans in southeastern Pennsylvania. Two directions we've taken it:
- Live edge walnut. The natural edge of the slab is left intact, so the table keeps the organic shape of the tree, and no two are the same.
- Walnut with other woods. Walnut pairs well with lighter species. One of our tables combines a maple and walnut top on a sculptural walnut X base, letting the contrast between the two woods show.
For the base, you can stay in wood or go with steel. Our steel bases can be left with a natural finish and a coat of wax, or powder-coated in any of hundreds of colors. Painted bases are available in any color. Tops can be rectangular, square, round, elliptical oval or racetrack oval.
Sizes
We build every table to the length and width you give us. The two walnut tables shown here are 72 inches long, one 30 inches wide and one 48 inches wide, but yours can be any size. Send us your room dimensions and how many people you usually seat, and we'll help you work it out. As a general rule of thumb, plan on roughly 24 inches of table edge per seated person and about 36 inches of clearance between the table and the wall.
Walnut dining tables we've built
Here are two of our walnut tables. Use either one as a starting point and change the size, shape or base.

72" × 30" live edge walnut on curved steel pedestals
A 72" × 30" live edge walnut top is supported by curved steel pedestal bases, blending the organic character of natural wood with sculptural steel. The flowing live edge preserves the individuality of the walnut, making each table unique.

72" × 48" maple and walnut oval on a walnut X base
A 72" × 48" elliptical oval top in maple and walnut is supported by a sculptural walnut X base. The contrasting wood species highlight the natural beauty and character of each, creating a bold composition.

Is your walnut solid wood?
Yes. We build solid walnut tables, using walnut sourced from Pennsylvania mills whenever possible.
